Birthdate: August 17, 1960
Birthplace: Burbank, CA
Occupations: Actor, Director
Quote: "One of the reasons people sell out so quickly is because even the talented think they're frauds. It's a culture that doesn't encourage people to believe in the work they do. You're told to second-guess yourself all the time. That's where I think a little hostility and arrogance can save you. And I've never been lacking for either." --USA Today, January 22, 1999

Biography
This intense, volatile American actor has appeared in film and on stage since the early 1980s. Described by THE NEW YORK TIMES as "both a human tempest and an actor of sizable gifts," Penn is at least as well-known for his brief but highly publicized marriage to pop phenomenon Madonna and his battles with the entertainment press as for his impressive body of work as an actor. He made his film debut providing strong support as Timothy Hutton's more level-headed roommate in "Taps" (1981), a sleeper drama about cadets who take over their military academy. America took notice with his hilarious yet finely nuanced portrayal of the perpetually stoned surfer Jeff Spicoli in Amy Heckerling's superior teen comedy, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982). While only in a supporting role, Penn emerged as a future star and went on to establish himself as one of Hollywood's finest actors, easily shifting genres while alternating between starring and character roles.
